The gardens of the Generalife in Granada are exquisite - the mazes, the patterned pebble paths and the fountain courts behind the ancient walls. They appeal to all one's senses. With this painting I attempt to make visible the feeling of being lifted away into another, romantic, world.
This painting was inspired by a visit to Cadiz, a walk along the bay, past the ancient battlements and the derelict pavilion. In it I have combined views of different cities and places, the Nevada Mountains, the Bay of Cadiz, the ancient world and contemporary Spain.

Holidays are what you long for when there are none in sight. In the above paintings, I tried to capture the feeling of being up in a room with a balcony and a sea view, so that I could look at them and and feel better about going to work.
During the catastophic floods in KwaZulu in 1988, we were there in a tent. We were nearly swept away. It was a very scary experience

This Free State area on the Lesotho border is where we spent many hiking holidays. We visited often, and I always made lots of drawings and watercolours, in order to take my holiday home with me.
